Service Description

Looking to dive deeper into solo jazz or perform a choreographed routine? This course is for you! What is Solo Jazz? Also known as Authentic Jazz, Vernacular Jazz, or Jazz Roots, this vibrant dance style developed alongside jazz music in the early 20th century. It's a solo form (no partner required!) that draws influences from Lindy Hop, tap dance, and African-American social dances of the era.** For this session, Kelly will be teaching her 1920s Charleston-inspired choreography to Annie & the Fur Trappers’ version of “Ain’t She Sweet,” as seen at Old School Swing on October 1st. In class, you’ll: Build and expand your solo jazz repertoire Learn variations, styling, and rhythms Explore how to bring energy, confidence, and performance quality to your dancing Level & Prerequisites: This course is open to all, but may feel fast-paced for total beginners. If you already know the basic Charleston, that’s helpful — but not mandatory. Just bring a good attitude and a willingness to move! What to Bring: Comfortable clothes you can dance in Water (you’ll sweat!) Enthusiasm and team spirit Performance Opportunity There will be optional performance opportunities (TBA). Performing is strongly encouraged but not required to take the class. If you do opt to perform, you'll need to: Commit to at least half of the class dates Be available for the final performance(s) Communicate and practice outside of class as needed While it's a solo routine, this is a team performance. The more we rehearse together, the stronger and more cohesive the piece will be — so show up for each other when you can! Course Perks: Practice resources to help you rehearse at home Free entry to social dances at The Dance Conservatory in November & December No drop-ins — this is a progressive course building toward a final performance Sources for solo jazz history: vintage-tap-and-swing.co.uk & silverscreendance.co.uk
